For Beginners

Welcome to the The Philly Tribe!

We offer 5Rhythms® dance classes and workshops w/our local 5Rhythms teacher, Rebekah Zhuraw, in the Philadelphia and Princeton areas, as well as workshops with visiting teachers in a variety of modalities in Philadelphia.

If you are new to conscious dance or The Philly Tribe, you are in good company :-) In any class or workshop, there will be people with a wide-range of experience, from newcomers like yourself to committed dancers and teachers. The best way to begin is just to step out onto the floor and see what happens.

Dance Floor Etiquette

In The Philly Tribe, you are free to explore how you move as an embodied being in a community of people involved in this same exploration. The modalities we offer have no steps to follow—just your feet, your breath, and the shape of your own heart. Don’t worry about knowing what to do. The facilitator will guide you. Just move, and the rest will follow!

As you do, take care of yourself. Go at your own pace. Chairs are available if you need them and you are encouraged to bring them out on the dance floor to stay part of the action.

Also take care of each other. Be sensitive to each other's boundaries and non-verbal cues. Always ask for consent before touching someone. Our common goal is to create a safe space for all dancers.

We dance in bare feet or dance shoes (no outside shoes or slippery socks—indoor only dance shoes are ok).

No scents, including essential oils, on the dance floor, please! Many people are chemical sensitive.

Please bring water or a water bottle to refill at the water fountain filling stations and anything else you require. The Weaver's Way Co-Op and Highpoint Coffee Shops are just one block away if you forget anything or are looking for a place to get a bite to eat.

And please feel free to linger after class as we clean up to meet the community & speak to the teacher!

Plus we have a Community Table at our classes where you can put out flyers for your own events, but please remember to take them with you when you go as we cannot store materials for other groups :-)

Everything alive has a dance.  Your only task is to find and express yours!  Come dance with us!

& please ask if you have any questions!

With love from the tribe-holders,

Rebekah, Mariama, Christina, Michelle, Kaitlynn, Keshia & Karen
